Mao Pagoda Lighthouse

The Mao Pagoda Lighthouse (Mǎo Tǎ, 泖塔), one of five ancient lighthouses in China, once guided ships along the silty Mao River (Mǎo Hé, 泖河) past Mao Island—today known as Sun Island.

Most recently renovated in 2002, the Mao Pagoda Lighthouse was first built in 874 during the Tang Dynasty. It was decommissioned in 1279 during the Song Dynasty after water traffic moving past the pagoda decreased.
