Narrow, green Sun Island (Tàiyáng Dǎo, 太阳岛) sits in the middle of the Mao River (Mǎo Hé, 泖河), a tributary of Shanghai’s Huangpu River to the southwest of the city. While island belongs to the Sun Island Golf & Hot Spring Resorts—with most of the island covered by a members-only golf course—the resort’s other recreation facilities and the Tang Dynasty Mao Pagoda Lighthouse are open to visitors as well as those staying at the resort and offer enough to fill a day on Sun Island.
Outdoor wave pool, waterslides and a beach
The large wave pool (RMB 200, RMB 120 for resort guests) simulated 23 kinds of waves and ends at a sandy beach equipped with the necessary chairs for sun worshippers and beach bums. Beside the pool, kids big and small can slip down one of three long, twisting waterslides. The pool is open 9am-7pm daily. Reservations can be made a day in advance for use after 7pm.
An indoor pool is also available daily 9am-9pm (RMB 150, free for resort guests).
Go-karts can be rented for RMB 35 per circuit daily 8am-5pm or for a different kind of ride, a horse riding track is available with horse rides for RMB 40 per time daily 8am-5pm. For those with a slower day on Sun Island in mind, a driving range—open 7am-7pm Mon-Fri and 5:30am-7pm on weekends— is also available. RMB 40 gets 50 balls while RMB 80 gets 80 balls.
The complex also has KTV rooms and a craft workshop, each priced differently.
