Unlike the distinguished Fuxing Park, Daning Lingshi is a rather recent addition to the city, but its sheer size makes it even more of a retreat from the urban sprawl: at 168 acres this is by far the largest park close to downtown Shanghai. (It’s fractionally smaller than Century Park acros the river.)
Sections of the park, which is adjacent to Shanghai Circus World, are modelled after different areas in China, meaning wooded “hills” in the north and lots of water features in the south. The latter even features a boating lake and man-made beach of imported white sand. To the west there’s a big marble arch and a flowery walkway called the “European Style Avenue,” all of which makes the place a hit with wedding photographers (in this city, anything with even a hint of green is), hand-holding couples, and families. Around the edges you might even run into that rarest of Shanghai species: joggers.
