Unless you have children snapping at your heels of a weekend, it’s hard to think of a good reason to come to the Shanghai Wild Animal Park (Shanghai Yesheng Dongwu Yuan). Spread across 153 rather depressing hectares out neat Pudong International Airport, not one of the park’s residents looks happy to be here.
The chief attraction is the safari tour, in which you can watch tigers, lions and cheetah up close from the safety of a minibus. Elsewhere there are pandas, elephants, giraffes, zebra, deer, yak, and monkeys; all of them in rather pitifully small enclosures. It’s part circus, too, with sealion shows, horse exhibits, and even greyhound racing. What it’s not is an enjoyable experience.
Save your money and make time instead for Shanghai Ocean Aquarium.
