Opened in the fall of 2010, these renovated old French Concession villas aren’t exactly for everyone—many will rent out for RMB 40,000 a night to those who crave more stars than the Hilton or Shangri-La could possibly muster. So, if you really want your own butler, driver, and beautifully maintained mansion complete with gardens and you’ve got the money, this is the place for you.
Others will be able to admire the renovated villas, dating back to Shanghai’s Jazz Age heyday in the 1920s and ’30s, from afar while also dining and shopping in the portion of Sinan Villas designated for commerce. Several big names in the Shanghai restaurant scene, Laris, Lee and Vargas warmly welcome guests to their Sinan Mansions restaurants. Shanghai Slims is an American steakhouse serving steak and lobster with a great wine list. Chicha, The Alchemist and The Public, formerly known as the Apothecary, serve fancy cocktails and Boxing Cat Brewery has its own tasty beer on tap. For a sweet treat, Häagen-Dazs is in the complex as well. You should be able to have a nice meal and a decent night out for 400 RMB—something that even an average wage earner could manage for a spurge.
