The Most Historical Hotel in Shanghai

Astor House Hotel was the first westerner-built hotel in China way back in 1864 during Qing Dynasty. Since its open, it had been a place frequented by celebs home and abroad—Einstein, Chaplin, Russel and more to name. Facing the Huangpu River, it has witnessed the great changes happened on the land since the last century.Though destroied during the war period, it reopened in 1954 and everything has been kept authentic, reminding you of days back in time.

The precious location on the Bund promises a good view of the Huangpu River from the rooms.  The interior holds a blend of old Shanghai and old England. Every corridor and corner leads you to old days in silent films.

But if you’re looking for a full on luxury experience – this might not be the place for you.  Don’t expect modern perfection with a good amount of history to go with it. The rooms are sort of dated but neat and huge (except those on the 6th floor whose size is half  of others).

Breakfast offers a wide range of choices and yet service is so so.

A bonus for you stay there is the fact that it is a popular wedding location so you might witness some Chinese weddings.

One possible problem would be noise  through the night, given the hustle and bustle on the Bund. After all, the whole package is just beyond its three-star rank.

Recommended Hotels for Admiring the Huangpu River of Shanghai

No.1 Grand Hyatt Shanghai    5-star from $232

No.2 Pudong Shangri-La Hotel Shanghai    5-star from $247

Located in the Lujiazui, the Pudong Shangri-La (Pudong Xianggelila Jiudian) offers spectacular views of the HuangpuRiver, the Bund and the surrounding space-age Pudong skyline. It’s an ideal place for those who are gluttons for luxury. The hotel isn’t especially close to any tourist attractions in particular, but ease access to subway will get you to other places for fun.

No.3 Astor House Hotel   3-star from $69

Compared with the other hotels along the Bund, Astor House Hotel holds the distinction of being an old but historically interesting hotel. Being the first westerner-built hotel in China back in 1846, it has a blended ambiance of old England and traditional China. Don’t expect modern perfection with a good amount of history to go with it. Though the view is not so splendid as those of the higher buildings, it is a great spot to admire the river while savoring the history of the city.

No.4 The Seagull on the Bund   4-star from $56

An old hotel on the Bund provides a nice view of the river and the major buildings in Pudong. All in all, the outdoor spots of the first-floor restaurant are worthier—great place to enjoy a meal for an unpretentious price and watch ships passing by.

No.5 Hanting Express (Shanghai Bund Branch)   2-star from $36

A well-located branch of the express hotel Hanting, It’s close to Yuyuan and the Bund but less convenient for transportation. The landscape king rooms provide a good view of the river, but the amenities are just at a basic business level and the environment is quite plain compared with the previous hotels.
